The Comox Valley Airport provides the first point of entry for many northern Vancouver Island tourists.
Part of the airport’s responsibility is to help form passengers’ first perceptions of the Comox Valley and northern Vancouver Island, the airport says in a news release.
This provides an ideal opportunity for YQQ to host an annual art exhibition featuring the work of artists residing in the airport’s catchment area. It covers Parksville, Port Alberni and Ucluelet in the south; the Pacific Ocean to the West; Texada, Denman, Hornby, Quadra, Cortes, Alert Bay and Sointula to the east; and the Pacific Ocean to the north.
In conjunction with the Comox Valley Air Commission and Comox Valley Community Arts Council, the airport is seeking two- and three-dimensional art pieces that represent the unique region of Northern Vancouver Island and/or the individual communities within this region. Art submissions may be in the form of paintings, original prints, photography, mixed media, textiles and/or sculpture.
Eligibility: Open to all artists residing in the Comox Valley Airport’s catchment area of Northern Vancouver Island, boundaries as described above.
Submission requirements:
• Each work must be accompanied with a 250-word statement explaining why it is representative of Northern Vancouver Island.
• Work must have been completed within the last three years.
• Each artist may submit up to four pieces which must be well labelled.
• Entry is by jpeg image to: info@comoxvalleyarts.org.
• All entries must be received by May 15, 2011.
Accepted work:
The Comox Valley Community Arts Council and Comox Valley Airport will select the work to be displayed.
Successful artists will be informed by the Comox Valley Community Arts Council.
No work may be withdrawn once it is accepted.
A work may be disqualified from the exhibition if it was misrepresented in the images used in the submission process.
The Comox Valley Airport reserves the right to photograph the selected works and use the images in publicity, educational and reference materials for the airport.
A loan agreement, including waiver, must be completed with the Comox Valley Community Arts Council.
Promotion of artists:
A wall hanging detailing the name of each artist and a description of their work will be displayed at the beginning of the exhibition.
Each artist will be featured on the Comox Valley Airport’s website. Information about their work as well as a contact name and website for the artist will be displayed.
Each artist will be featured in a press release announcing the launch of the exhibition.
Artists will be invited to attend a launch event publicly marking the opening of the exhibition.
Proposals are reviewed annually by a jury of five people.
Artwork is changed annually. Potential buyers are directed to individual artists and no commission is charged. Shipping artwork to and from CVCAC is the artist’s responsibility.
The Comox Valley Community Arts Council’s mission is to “facilitate and animate the arts in the Comox Valley by collecting and disseminating information to the arts community, by educating the public about the arts, and by promoting the Comox Valley as a creative and dynamic arts-producing centre.”
