“Prairie Whispers... depicting the quiet beauty of the prairies” by Susan Schaefer will be coming to Island Exposures this September.

For the month of September, “Prairie Whispers… depicting the quiet beauty of the prairies” will be on display at Island Exposures,

5-183 West Island Hwy, Parksville.

Prairie Whispers is on the move again. During May and June, the traveling show was exhibited at the Signal Hills Arts Centre in Weyburn Sask. The show was an overwhelming success with the City of Weyburn purchasing one of the originals for their ‘permanent collection’.

The show consists of acrylic paintings, including sway-back barns, chuck wagons, the iconic elevators and much more. Born and raised in the prairies, Susan Schaefer holds the prairie landscapes close to her heart. Her brother and father still farm the family homestead, now more than 100 years old.

“The idea of doing a series of prairie paintings came about while visiting my parents in Fort Qu’Appelle Saskatchewan. Their neighbour dropped by and asked if I could do a painting of an elevator from the town where his wife grew up. Shortly after that another lady asked me to  paint an elevator from her hometown. I have since done numerous commissions, many of them elevators, including the popular ‘Dog River’ from the TV show Corner Gas,” said Shaefer through a news release.

“I love painting prairie scenes as I am able to preserve a small bit of history on the canvas, while capturing the quiet beauty of the prairies.”

Now residing in Qualicum Beach, Schaefer continues to grow as an artist by participating

and organizing workshops by professional artists that she admires. She is also the publisher of the Island Arts Magazine. From the Prairies… to the West Coast… and Beyond!
