Artists explore race and culture

Internationally-renowned Metis and Mi’kmaq artists' show continues until Sept. 1

A new exhibition at the Campbell River Art Gallery that explores race and visual culture opened last night and will continue throughout August.

The exhibition, Aja’sit, by artists Amy Malbeuf and Jordan Bennett, will continue at the Gallery until Sept. 1.  Aja’sit, which means s/he is moving, presents the two artists’ current works and how their practices overlap and challenge each other through the exploration of mobility and notions of place.

Malbeuf is a Métis visual artist from Rich Lake, Alta., who utilizes caribou hair tufting, beadwork and performance to examine relationships between humanity and nature, as well as race and culture.

Malbeuf has exhibited her work nationally and internationally at such venues as Art Mur in Montreal, and the KINGS Artist Run Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Bennett is a multi-disciplinary visual artist of Mi’kmaq heritage from Stephenville Crossing, Nfld., whose work is currently exploring notions of the living artifact through Mi’kmaq and Beothuk visual culture.

Bennett has shown his work extensively in Canada and abroad, in venues such as The Museum of Art and Design in New York City, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, France, and many more.
