Artists needed for project at Kelowna International Airport

"Provide departing travellers with remembrances of the beauty and graciousness that is the Okanagan..."

Suk’wtemsqilxw West Kelowna Arts Council has issued a call to artists  for a project at the Kelowna International Airport catchment area that is open April 1 to 30.

The goal is twofold: to provide departing travellers with remembrances of the beauty and graciousness that is the Okanagan, and to support retail success for the artists and for Skyway Gourmet Ventures Inc. Artworks will be juried into the airport based on content, ability, size and price. SWAC’s business model focuses on community engagement and empowerment.

“Sure, we’re an arts council, but we’re an arts council that really works on supporting the principle of Creative Commerce,” said SWAC Chair, Julia Trops. “Our goal is to empower our artists, and encourage them to become a vital and integral entrepreneurial part of the local and tourist landscape. We also hope there will be a continued artist-client relationship even after the sale, as many tourists to the Okanagan are repeat visitors.”

Although SWAC is located in West Kelowna, SWAC has developed a program that invites and supports all artists, both First Nation and non First Nation, from the entire YLW catchment area (BC’s Southern Interior).

In order to keep artworks fresh and appealing, SWAC has implemented performance ratios and cycles for the accepted cultural items in order to provide fair opportunity for all interested artists. All artists from the YLW catchment area are welcome to apply.
