The Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society is hosting a family fun arts and nature festival at Ts’uubaa-asatx Town Square on Sept. 4.
There’ll be lots to see and do and best of all, it’s free!
“The event will feature fish printing with Genevieve Singleton, more activities for the young and young at heART, live music with The 4 Cowichan Lake Tenors, Music Together Mid Island, Thomas Waldron, and the Tzinquaw Dancers,” according to Kathie Fielding, Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society’s president.
“Also on site are en plein air artists and vendors selling their art.”
The event kicks off a busy time of the year for the Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society. For those that like painting, photography and quilting, it’s an especially exciting time.
Beginning Sept. 16, and every two weeks thereafter, watercolour classes begin.
“We start with a very limited palette of colours, explore colour and technique and above all have fun with watercolour paints,” explained Fielding.
“No drop-ins are refused instruction,” she added, “but the entire series is for CLAC members and will be held in the Lake Cowichan library.”
Membership to the Society is $20 a year and $50 for three years.
Bring your own paper, brushes and paints for the watercolour classes. Email: info@cowichanlakeartsandculture.org to learn more.
Two other Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society events kick off on Oct. 2 and the first, a “worldwide photo walk” begins at 9 a.m. sharp at Saywell Park.
“Help to create a snapshot of the world as photographers from around the world will be taking pictures of their hometown,” Fielding said. “No experience is necessary, but you will need your camera or smart phone.”
Keep an eye on the group’s website (www.cowichanlakeartsandculture.org) for more details to come.
And finally, Oct. 2 also marks the start of an eight-week online series on quilting using Half Square Triangles.
“This online series of eight weekly lessons assumes you have no experience in quilting and will lead you through the process and show you an assortment of ideas to design your own lap quilt,” Fielding said.
“We will also take a look a quilting in our culture — history, music, and art. You supply your own materials, or we can, at an additional cost.”
For members of the Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society, the eight-week series will cost $20, and for non-members, the price is $40.
Anyone interested in arts and culture in Lake Cowichan are also encouraged to fill out the Cowichan Lake Arts and Culture Society’s online survey.
The questionnaire aims to create a database of all the creative types around Cowichan Lake and the Society hopes to use the data to help plan for future programs. Check out the group’s website (www.cowichanlakeartsandculture.org) for more.
