Arts around: ‘Art in Schools’ coming to Rollin

A smattering of this, that and the other from here and there in Port Alberni's arts and entertainment scene.

New exhibit ‘Art In Schools’

The Rollin Art Centre is excited to present an entire art show dedicated to local elementary school children.

The exhibit is from May 13 to June 7, and features four local elementary schools and the children who took part in Art in the Schools.

Come out and meet these talented children at their “artists” reception, Sat. May 24 from 1-3 p.m. Join us for refreshments and wander the gallery that will showcase their work.

This year’s gigantic book sale is Saturday, May 10 from 9-3 p.m. at Echo Community Centre.

This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Community Arts Council, and will not disappoint. This year marks one of the largest selections of books we have ever seen, so you don’t miss this wonderful event and help support the Community Arts Council and the Rollin Art Centre.

Thank you for your donations but we no longer need them at this time.

Banner year is here

It’s that time of year again.

The Arrowsmith Rotary Club will be sponsoring the ever-loved Banner Program.

Children, adults and schools can partake in this great community event. There is a $10 registration fee, to cover the cost of supplies.

Forms can be picked up at the Rollin Art Centre Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Deadline is May 17. An event is planned for May 22-25 at the Kinsmen Community Centre.

Green lantern making class

Learn the history of lantern festivals and light creations at our lantern creations workshops.

Join instructor Erin Ryding for two evenings of lanterns, light sculptures and the materials used.

Learn how to build at least two different lantern styles, the dos and don’ts of teaching others how to build and how to organize a workshop.

This is a workshop that concludes with a certificate to teach lantern making classes.

Call Echo today to register. Classes are on Wednesday, May 28, and on Thursday, May 29, from 6-9 p.m. Cost is $15 at Echo community centre.

Lantern making made fun

This workshop concentrates on the ideas and helpful hints to get you started on creating your own lantern masterpieces.

Classes will be held at Echo Centre to learn how to make bamboo and tissue paper designs. Create whatever you can imagine.

After making your own lanterns creations, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Rollin Art Centre’s Celebration of Lights festival, November 29.

Workshops are on July 16, 23, 30, and on August 6 from 6-9 p.m.

Christmas eight months away

This year’s McLean’s’ Christmas market will be back again with its ever-loved Light Up.

Yes, this wonderful light-up will take place for two weekends, December 6-7, and on December 12-14.

If you are interested in renting a table in the main building or one of the heritage buildings, for one weekend or two, there is still room.

Events have been planned along with the train arriving at set times.

Mothers Day choir concert

Timbre! Choir would like you to join them on Sunday, May 11th at 2:30 p.m. at ADSS Theatre for a performance of the Peacemakers by Karl Jenkins.

Please join Pat Miller, Timbre! Choir, Danielle Marcinek, the Barry Miller Trio and other special guests for this lovely afternoon of music.  Tickets on sale at Rollin Art Centre (cash only), Echo Centre, Salmonberry’s and at the door.

James Dean in Port Alberni

Portal Players dramatic Society presents the next performance at the Capitol Theatre – Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

Tickets are now on sale at the Rollin Art Centre and box office. This performance will run from May 1-17. Tickets: Adults: $15 and Seniors/Students $13 in advance.
