Arts around: Art’s going to be cool at the pool

Melissa Martin gives the who, what and where for Alberni's arts and entertainment scene.

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley in collaboration with the City of Port Alberni is looking for artists to design original permanent murals to be installed at Echo Centre Pool.

We are proposing a series of different sized murals that will cover the walls in the pool area at Echo Centre. These murals will be made out of aluminum composite panels. All materials will be supplied.

School-aged artists featured

The Rollin Art Centre is excited to present an entire art show dedicated to local elementary school children. This exhibit started May 13 and runs until June 7, and features children who took part in Art in the Schools at four elementary schools.

Come out and meet these talented children at their artists’ reception, Saturday, May 24 from 1–3 p.m. Join us for refreshments and wander the gallery showcase their artwork.

Landscapes in oil are next

The Rollin Art Centre gallery will feature local artist Murray Claughton from June 10–July 5.

Claughton will exhibit a selection of oil painting of both local landscapes and his travels to Mexico. Meet Claughton in the gallery on Saturday, June 14 from 1–3 p.m.

May 17 banner deadline

Individuals, families, schools and groups have until May 17 to sign up for the annual art banner program, sponsored by the Arrowsmith Rotary Club. There is a $10 registration fee to cover the cost of supplies. Forms can be picked up at the Rollin Art Centre Tuesday – Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The painting event is planned for May 22–25 at the Kinsmen Community Centre.

Lantern making instructor class

Are you interested in learning how to teach others how to make lanterns? There is still room in the Lantern Creations instructor training workshops planned for Echo Centre later this month.

Call Echo Centre at 250-723-2181 to register. Classes are Wednesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 29 from 6-9 p.m. at Echo Centre. Cost is $15.

Book now for Mill Market

Tables are available for this year’s McLean Mill Christmas market. This year’s “Market at the Mill” marks the return of the popular Light-Up event for two weekends, Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 12-14.

If you are interested in renting a table in the main building or one of the heritage buildings, for one weekend or two, there is still room. Events have been planned along with the train arriving at set times.

Spring into art at DRAW

Spring Into ART!  Nature Inspired & Found Objects Group Show continues at DRAW Gallery until June 28.

The show explores  the theme “How are we connected to the natural world around us as well as the nature within us” with new work by a number of artists exhibiting in a variety of media.
