Creative types age 10 years old and up are invited to take something (or some things) old and make it new and inventive through the Township of Langley’s fourth annual Upcycling Design Challenge.
The contest is intended to get Langley residents thinking about how to reuse materials that might otherwise end up in the landfill. Participants must use a minimum of 75 per cent reclaimed materials in their piece and there is just a little over a month to have finished pieces submitted in time for the Apr. 8 deadline.
Prizes are on the line – along with bragging rights since contest entries will be displayed in Willowbrook Shopping Centre. Prize categories include: People’s Choice, Best in Show, Best Use of Challenge Material, Most Practical, and Best Youth.

Derrival plays for PA-MOJA
Langley Fine Arts School (LFAS) hosts a birthday celebration/fundraiser event in support of PA-MOJA featuring local band Derrival, along with some special guests, at the school’s Chief Sepass Theatre at 7 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 4.
PA-MOJA (which means together in Swahili) is a North American charity that supports children of Kenya to go to school while also supporting a wildlife conservancy in Kenya. The organization began at LFAS and will now celebrate its 10th birthday.
Three of the five members of the indie-rock band Derrival were LFAS students who also served as student leaders for PA-MOJA.

Byrd Dawg celebrates duos
Early classic rock music will be celebrated in Fort Langley on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chief Sepass Theatre with Byrd Dawg and the Vintage Electric Band.
The duos of The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkle will be celebrated in Byrd Dawg’s Old Friends Tour.

Classic cars roll into Fort
Look for Ford model Thunderbirds on the streets of Fort Langley on Sunday when the Totem Classic Thunderbird Car Club of BC makes its way to the Fort Langley National Historic Site, Langley Centennial Museum, and the BC Farm Museum.
The club, which began in 1976, has about 90 member enthusiasts who have a keen interest in Thunderbird models from 1955 to 2005.
The cars are expected to roll into Fort Langley around 1 p.m. and depending upon weather will visit all three locations.
Wedding planning times two
Two wedding planning events are coming to Langley. One on Monday and the other to mark on the calendar for early April.
The Fraser Valley Wedding Festival is on Monday Mar. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cascades Casino Resort. Brides and grooms receive free admission to the 11th anniversary show.
Find gowns, men’s wear, jewelry, music providers, wedding cakes and cupcakes, and all the wedding trimmings. Complimentary tastings, contests, and prizes make up the event along with mini-seminars.

Put April 9 on the calendar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Love in the Country Vintage Bridal Market at Estate 248 at Poppy Estate Golf Course.
This event will feature live demos, professionals on site, and shopping.
Barn dance brings fiddlers
The West Coast Fiddlers, a group of school-aged and young-adult fiddle players from around the Fraser Valley are set to play the 10th annual barn dance put on by the Harmony Music Society.
From ages nine to 17, there are 12 in the West Coast Fiddlers who will play at various times during the Saturday, Mar. 5 event held at Southridge Community Church. Their music is described as a mix of Celtic, Cape Breton, and traditional fiddle music.
Joining the West Coast Fiddlers will be the Tartan Players, a Scottish dance band much sought after for the professional skills. The Tartan Players will perform the majority of the music for the fun dance night. Students from the Sabir Sisters Music Studio will also take the stage.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with music and food available for purchase. Then at 6:30 p.m. the dancing begins. Described as Scottish line dancing, there will be demonstrations and there is no experience required to take part.
Games, desserts, and a silent auction will also add to the fundraising event which is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are available at the door or through harmonymusicsociety@gmail.com or by calling 604-312-7578.
