February at Oak Bay Avenue’s Gage Gallery is all about a thriving future.

The gallery welcomes a solo exhibition of paintings by Joanne Thomson Feb. 1 to 18.

“Globally we seem to have slipped into a normalization of conflict even while at our soul levels we comprehend that conflict is not the solution,” the artist says. “Thrive presents a vision for sharing the natural world as a path to our own evolution.”

Equal parts exquisite small watercolour paintings on paper from Thomson’s Mason Jar Series and powerful watercolour on canvas depictions of diverse forest ecosystems, this exhibition presents the familiar in unfamiliar ways and the unfamiliar in familiar ways. Expect to laugh and contemplate, Thomson says.

A variety of special events are planned around the exhibition, including an opening reception and artist talk at Gage, Feb. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.

On Feb. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. take in Make Art with your Sweetheart, a free art-making event.

On Feb. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m., join Thomson and Alanah Nasadyk from Habitat Acquisition Trust for Shore do love YOU, a by-donation art-making event at the Gage Gallery to raise awareness of shoreline restoration in Metchosin. HAT is a local land trust organization that Thomson supports for its mature vision of preserving wild areas in harmony with human habitation by using methods that rely on co-operation and balance.
