Auditions Wednesday for Canadian plays

The studio theatre is holding its second night of auditions for two new plays Wednesday.

The studio theatre is holding its second night of auditions for two new plays Wednesday.

“We are auditioning for two Canadian one act plays,” says Sheryl-Lynn Lewis who will direct Mary’s Wedding written by Stephen Massicotte.

Mary’s Wedding has two characters, Mary and Charlie who meet at the beginning of the First World War,” Lewis says.

Problem Child, written by George F. Walker will be directed by Sheryl-Lynn’s husband Curt Sprickerhoff. This play has four characters.

“There is a young couple who are trying to get their baby back from the system, a female social worker and the male hotel manager,” Lewis says.

She says both couples in Problem Child are younger, ages 18 to 30 or so, while the social worker and hotel manager can be any adult age.

Auditions for Mary’s Wedding and Problem Child continue Wednesday, Jan. 10 in the Kornak and Hamm’s Pharmacy board room on Yorston Street starting at 7 p.m.

“New actors are more than welcome,” Lewis says.

The two plays will be on stage at the Studio Theatre May 3 to 6, 10 to 14, and 17 to 21, as well as being entered in the zone festival at the end of May.

Lewis describes Mary’s Wedding as a play with a heart as big as the skies, an unforgettable story of love, hope, and survival.

On the night before her wedding, Mary dreams of a thunderstorm, during which she unexpectedly meets Charlie sheltering in a barn beside his horse. With innocence and humour, the two discover a charming first love.

But the year is 1914, and the world is collapsing into a brutal war.

Together, they attempt to hide their love, galloping through the fields for a place and time where the tumultuous uncertainties of battle can’t find them.

Problem Child is an absurdist black comedy about an ex-drug-addict and a TV-addicted ex-con who is trying to deal with a by-the-book social worker in order to get her child back from the system.
