The Anthony Argatoff Ensemble will be in concert on Dec. 30 at Muninn’s Post in Kelowna.
Kelowna saxophonist Anthony Argatoff will lead his 12-person ensemble through a performance of Cobra by legendary avant-garde composer and saxophonist John Zorn.
The ensemble consists of some of Kelowna’s finest young musical talent, including saxophonists Harrison Argatoff, James Bayford and Zach Griffin, trumpeter Madeleine Ertel, trombonist Gregory Dent, guitarist Gilbert Kafka, keyboardists Timothy Hirtz and Bjorn Kriel, bassist Alex Argatoff, drummers Jason Martin and Curtis Hamm, as well as local saxophonist/bassoonist and Skin and Bones director Darren Williams.
Completed in 1984, Cobra is the most iconic of Zorn’s game pieces—a composition that is without a predetermined sequence of (musical) events.
Instead of being written out in traditional music notation (sheet music) Cobra consists of a set of instructional cues written on display cards that direct the players what to do. The music is completely improvised and music lovers can expect a night of provocative sounds, dynamic interplay, and sonic rebellion demonstrated by some of Kelowna’s youngest musical firebrands.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 9 p.m. Muninn’s Post is located at 575 Bernard Ave. in downtown Kelowna. Admission is $10 but just $8 for Alternator members. Tickets at the door or in advance from the Alternator. Non-members also have the option to purchase tickets at Milkcrate Records on Ellis Street.
This concert is the 15th installment of the Skin And Bones Music Series. Now in its second year of production, Skin And Bones is an Okanagan Arts Award nominated concert series devoted to the presentation of experimental music in the Okanagan, produced through the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art.
