Enjoy some old-time music mixed with bluegrass and topped with a healthy dose of originality at the MAC on Friday.

Annie Louise Genest is playing at the McMillan Arts Centre’s MACoustic Cafe on May 17.

Genest has been nominated for Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Juno for her music. She spent 20 years living in Yukon Woods where she says she tapped into her exploratory self and started making music.

She released a couple of solo albums with electric instruments and then started to find her voice, moving toward acoustic sounds, traditional country, old time music and bluegrass.

Genest moved to this area last year.

The music is very community-based, she said in a recent interview with The NEWS, and brings people together.

Genest’s first album as The Annie Lou Band received nominations for a Juno and a Canadian Folk Music Award (CFMA). Her latest album, Grandma’s Rules for Drinking, snagged her nominations for two CFMAs last year, as English Songwriter of the Year and Solo Artist of the Year. The title track on that album also reached number one on the international folk DJ chart.

On Friday night the doors at the MAC open at 7 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30. Tickets are $5 at the door. As always, the first half of the concert is an open stage. Slots are limited — those who would like to play contact Kerri Coombs at kerri@livingmidnight.com.
