BC Arts Council Grants awarded in Kelowna

Kelowna writer Ashley Little has received a scholarship from the BC Arts Council.

One local artist and one local arts organization will benefit from two BC Arts Council grants totalling $31,000.

The Kelowna Museums Society is receiving $25,000 to support an arts internship, while local writer Ashley Little is receiving a $6,000 scholarship award.

The funding is provided for scholarship awards and media arts as well as professional development, early career development and touring initiatives in the performing arts and studio arts fields.

The funding is part of a record $24 million provided to the BC Arts Council by the provincial government to support the B.C.’s arts and culture sector in this fiscal year.

Recipients were chosen after the BC Arts Council’s independent peer-review process took place this past summer.

“These B.C. Arts Council grants support artists in their early career development,”Premier Christy Clark, MLA for Westside-Kelowna, said earlier this month. “It’s a chance for these up-and-coming artists to continue to develop their skills, and have more opportunities to share them.”

“Ashley Little is a talented writer in my constituency, and I congratulate her on receiving this scholarship,” said Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson. “I wish her well as she continues to develop her skills, and produce works of interest to readers in Kelowna and beyond.”

These two grants are among 257 grants worth a combined $2.58 million that are being distributed to artists and arts organizations throughout B.C. as part of the latest round of successful BC Arts Council grant adjudications.

“These 257 grants will go a long way in developing professional artists right across the province,” said Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick. “We’re lucky to have a vibrant arts scene in Kelowna, and these local grant recipients are so deserving of our support.”
