The Strathcona Big Band, Campbell River’s own 19 piece swing and jazz big band is returning to the Royal Coachman Pub this Sunday from 1-4 p.m. to bring this year’s successful Sunday afternoon jazz program to an end.
The band, formerly known as the Little Big Band, is largely comprised of local Campbell River musicians with a sprinkling of saxes from Courtenay and is a regular returning favourite to the pub over the past few years.
In addition to inspired and energetic solos by well known and respected local musicians like Roger Kirk and Jay Havelar on trumpet, Carrie Fowler on tenor sax and Suzie Christensen on alto sax, newcomers Evie Kenny, Colin Massie, Tom Tinsley and Dave Johnson also light things up on the cozy Coachman stage.
Rounding out the sets is Amy Lelliot on vocals, bringing some familiar standards and some warm Christmas cheer.
Last year’s appearance of the local big band packed the pub so be sure to bring a friend and come early for the lunch and best seats.
Admission is by donation and the chef-inspired lunch menu is an added bonus.
