Lovers of Big Band music have something to look forward to this weekend.
Five Big Bands from throughout the Okanagan are coming together for a day of music in support of the South Okanagan Access Centre.
The South Okanagan Big Band, along with the Thursday Night Jazz Band, Dreamland and the Okanagan Valley and Lake Country Big Bands are performing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the South Main Drop-in Centre.
Musicians in the bands represent a range of abilities and backgrounds, according to Richard de Jonge, the event co-ordinator and a member of the South Okanagan Big Band. That includes, he said, musicians from intermediate to experienced and a few seasoned professionals.
“These bands have joined forces to create a fun-filled day of music while helping raise some funds for charities that provide needed services in our communities,” said de Jonge. “We are excited to kick off our first annual Big Band Bash here in Penticton. I know this will be an event that music lovers look forward to for years to come.”
The South Okanagan ACCESS Centre is proud to be the chosen recipient of the proceeds raised by this year’s event.
“I’m always grateful for the support of the Thursday Night Jazz band, who play an amazing concert for us every year,” said ACCESS board chair, Elmie Saaltink. “This will enable us to continue our work to ensure that those in need in our community can access the support, services and resources they need to move their lives forward.”
Tickets for the Big Band Bash are $20/person and provide all-day access. There will be a cash bar and food concession on-site as well as raffle and draws.
