The Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club will play host to a large black-powder shoot over the May long weekend.
Mike Brown, of the Monashee Mountain Men, the group that organizes the shoot, said 93 shooters attended last year’s event, and he hopes to have at least as many this year.
The event opens to early campers on Thursday, May 19 and runs through to a final shotgun shoot on the morning of May 23.
Brown said he expects shooters from all over the Okanagan as well as Chilliwack, Prince George and a few from Alberta to attend the event, which is open to spectators.
The Monashee Mountain men dress as Hudson’s Bay fur traders, with an emphasis on black-powder firearms from the era.
Brown said while most of their black-powder firearms are historically faithful re-productions, there are also some refurbished originals.
The shoot will feature flintlock and percussion cap pistols and rifles as well as larger cannons.
The cannon shoot, and shooting competitions will be scheduled throughout the weekend based on the weather Brown said.
Shooting begins 8:30 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
