Coming off a rousing reception in a performance earlier this year, Blue Moon Marquee is back at Lazy Mike’s House of Music Thursday night for an evening of hollerin’ blues, stomp jazz and minor swing.
The duo of A.W. Cardinal (vocals, guitar) and Jasmine Colette (bass, drums, vocals) writes and performs original songs with influences from early blues, jazz and swing greats like Lonnie Johnson, Skip James, Charley Patton, Howlin’ Wolf, Bill Jennings, Big Bill Broonzy and Django Reindhart.
The sound harkens back to the dusty Hoodoos and Rocky Mountains of Alberta, where the duo met and began collaborating before relocating to Vancouver Island.
Lazy Mike’s House of Music, which bills itself as a “cool, intimate social non-licensed venue” provides the perfect backdrop for Blue Moon Marquee to replicate the sensation of a “hole-in-the-wall, murky old jazz club,” as Colette said prior to the group’s first appearance here, in March.
The show kicks off the 2015-16 season at Lazy Mike’s, located at the Sandhill Market, on the corner of Highway 4 and Clarke Road in Whiskey Creek.
Showtime is 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, with doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $15 at the door or by pre-purchase at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and Lazy Mike’s. You can also get tickets or more info at 250-594-9951.
