Annual summer series provides quality entertainment

One of Langford’s most popular ongoing summer events will soon be providing Sunday entertainment.

Music in the Park kicks off its two-month West Shore run July 5 with opening act Rukus. The longtime Victoria-area band is well known for its combination of old-time classics and more modern rock and roll and is sure to get visitors to Veteran’s Memorial Park up and dancing, along with other musical acts scheduled this summer, says event organizer Peter Willing.

“This is an opportunity for people to hear bands they might not otherwise hear unless they went to a club downtown,” he says.

“You can get out and sit for a couple hours and listen to somebody like Rukus or the Soul Shakers.”

The groups on the agenda represent a mix of “old British rock to Celtic to country,” says Willing, a musician himself who will perform on one of the Sundays with the Ready Willing Band.

Other bands lined up include the Paul Wainwright Trio, Backbeat, Cookeilidh, Chickwagon and Rusty and the Roosters.

The events generally draw about 100 people to the park, and with a large dance area, there’s plenty of room to kick up your feet.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Prince Edward Branch 91 in Langford are on hand every week selling barbecued hot dogs, pop, chips and ice cream, as a fundraiser for Legion-sponsored programs in the community.

“It’s a really nice afternoon,” Willing says. “There’s lots of shade there, if you don’t want to sit in the sunshine. Where else can you go and get that quality of free entertainment, and get a hit dog and a bag of chips and a pop for $5?”

The concerts run from 2 to 4 p.m., July 5 to Aug. 30.
