Scott Cozens and Sheldon Smithens are having a great time and looking forward to kicking off a new season of Canadian Pickers which may include a stop in Golden and the surrounding areas.

If you live in or around Golden and have vintage items, memorabilia, collectibles, or antiques to sell for cash then Canadian Pickers is looking for you.

The popular television show is starting to get ready for production on the second season and the Golden area is on their radar.

Sheldon Smithens and Scott Cozens are the hosts of the show and have been collecting and selling items for many years.

“The first season was exhilarating. We got to travel across the country. We bought some great things but more importantly we met some unbelievable people and got to see the country at the same time. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Smithens said.

Originally Smithens was asked if he knows anyone who could be cast to be on the show.

“I suggested several people because there seems like there are a lot of characters in the antiques trade.”

He suggested the company get in touch with his friend of 20 years, Cozens, and also decided to throw his name into the mix at the very end of the process. After doing a mock up for what the men thought the show could be the decision was made that they would be the hosts of the show.

Going into the first year of making a television show Smithens did not know how much went into completing a program.

“I have been purchasing antiques virtually my whole life but I never realized there were that many people out there who had so many things. Barns, out buildings, sheds and attics. They are just bursting with things.”

The other things he has found out is that making television is not as easy as it looks.

“What you see in a one hour program is the culmination of us putting on a lot of hours and a lot of miles. It is actually much more difficult and longer than what you might expect,” Smithens said.

As for what they are looking for going into year two, Smithens said “We are looking for people that do not mind being on television. Collectors of any sort. A passion usually comes along with acquiring lots of things but there are exceptions. It is a hodgepodge. We are looking for people to have fun with it and that is our main priority.”

Smithens also credited the success of the show with the staff of production people who come along on the journeys they are taking. Heading into year two there are still a couple of provinces that the host is still looking to get to that were not in the first season.

“We have barely touched the surface. We did 13 episodes in our first year and now we are making a point to fill in some of the provinces we missed. We missed Saskatchewan and we are on our way to Newfoundland,” Smithens said.

He went on to say that both hosts are thrilled that people have taken to the show and how in their travels fans explain just how much fun the show is to watch. The production team will be heading down to B.C. in mid-August and are currently looking for places and people to pick for the second season of the series.
