The stage is being set for young thespians at a local summer camp.
Lana O’Brien, W.L. Seaton Secondary School drama teacher and head of 27th Street Theatre Company, and her husband Mike are leading a week-long drama camp for ages 10 to 14.
Taking place at MacKenzie Camp, which is owned by the United Church of Canada and is located in the picturesque cottage country area of Mabel Lake, east of Enderby, the camp takes place Aug. 5 to 9.
For O’Brien, the creation of theatre is about literally stepping into someone else’s shoes.
“It provides a wonderful vehicle for people to learn empathy for others as they imagine themselves living someone else’s life,” she said. “It breaks down social barriers and improves communication between people. And the kids bring incredible energy, open hearts, and a desire to learn and have fun. It’s awesome.”
The camp theme for the summer is pay it forward, which has inspired O’Brien to create a musical theatre program where modern music with similar themes will be used to create a song and dance extravaganza about finding ways to help others.
“Students will learn to sing, move and dance and will present their creation for parents and guests at the camp on Aug. 9,” said O’Brien, adding, “There are other awesome camp activities for kids at MacKenzie too, and all campers will get to experience everything.”
Some of those activities include outdoor adventures such as the climbing wall, archery and canoeing as well as learning life skills and personal development during quiet reflection, craft, and conversation times.
