Celtic theme for first art show

Arts and culture events and news in and around Summerland.

Storybook Landscapes, an installation and paintings with a Celtic theme by Stephen Prowse, is the first show of 2012 at the Summerland Art Gallery.

There will be an opening reception next Thursday, Jan. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.

In the adjoining Adams Room will be a show entitled Towards the Light, featuring oil paintings of trees and landscapes by Margaret Munn.

Both shows will be on display from Jan. 19 to March 3.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Summerland Art Gallery is at 9533 Main St.

Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the Annual Arts Appreciation Award which is given annually by the Summerland Community Arts Council, to the individual who has made the greatest contribution to the development, promotion or appreciation of the arts, directly or indirectly.

The person receiving the award need not be an artist or craftsperson themselves.

Nominations are welcomed from anyone in the community.

Nominations are due by Saturday, February 11, 2012 and can be obtained online at summerlandarts.com or at the Arts Centre.

This award will be presented at the 74th annual Summerland Business and Community Excellence Awards that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Summerland Waterfront Resort.

Film series

A Dangerous Method is the next film in the Kitchen Stove Film Series and will be shown on Jan. 19 at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Pen Mar Theatre on Martin Street in Penticton.

This compelling historical drama about the birth of psychoanalysis charts the intense and inextricably interwoven relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud and Sabina Spielrein, the beautiful, troubled patient who comes between them.

Also screening as part of the 2011 Student Film Showcase is Blink by Miles Jay.

Play reading

Summerland Singers and Players are holding their next play reading on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. and will be reading Sunday Dinner.

No experience necessary. It’s just a fun and social evening. Everyone welcome.

Symphony

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra will be performing Masterworks series III – Fireworks on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cleland Theatre.

Dance club

The Friday Night Dance Club meets again this Saturday, Jan. 14 with the band Buzz Byer at the Legion, 250-494-1804.
