Right in time for those New Year’s resolutions comes The Time Machine Diet, a book by Central Saanich author Vadym Graifer.

In the book, Graifer shares some of his methods to how he lost his desired weight. His wife, Iryna also lost a significant amount of weight using his techniques.

“The book describes our experience and method of losing weight, reversing diabetes and hypertension, so we right now control that through food without any medications,” said Graifer.

Both used to take medication for hypertension, with Graifer also suffering from Type 2 diabetes, both of which are now diminished.

“Right now we are off all the medications,” he said.

When it comes to weight loss, he said, there really is no secret.

“It’s a return to the ways we used to eat before various reasons of which the food industry effort is not probably the last to blame and changed the content of our food and the way we think.”

The book contains recipes and follows his journey with advice along the way.

Three years ago, he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which he said was an alarm bell for him — and the title of his first chapter.

“(For) about a year I spent trying to find my way in the dark …”

A year after that he started formulating a way of reversing his condition and for about a year he looked for better food, replacing traditional starchy and sugary foods with healthy ingredients.

Exercise came a bit later.

Graifer’s concept is to eat normally five days out of the week and for two non-consecutive days, eat significantly less in a fasting type form [editor’s note: consult physicians before trying].

“The effect on your body of this method is absolutely amazing,” he said.

After seeing his blood results and how his weight plummeted, he decided he would write a diary about it, tracking the results.

The book describes, in three parts, Graifer’s method. These include the replacement of sugary foods, intermittent fasting and eating fermented foods, cultivating good gut bacteria

Graifer’s wife, Iryna also lost weight, losing 40 pounds in eight months and her resolution this year is to just maintain it.

She also wants to share the book with others.

“The main thing (is) we travel back in time to our youthful health,” Iryna said.

Travelling back to their youthful health is where the title of the book came to mind, as they realized they feel as they used to feel when they were 30, which was over 20 years ago.

“It was just so good to do it together because you’re a team and it’s working,” said Iryna.

As for Vadym’s resolution, it’s all about trying to help as many people as possible do and feel the same.
