The next few weeks are a feast of events to choose from. Think turkey dinner: there’s something on the table for everyone – and half the neighbourhood, too.
The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra is back at the Performing Arts Centre this evening for their February Masterworks concert, Poised for Flight.
Along with 18-year-old piano prodigy Jan Lisiecki, the symphony brings a program celebrating young talent including Bizet’s Symphony in C – which was composed when Bizet was just 17 years old. The concert starts at 7 p.m. with a pre-concert talk in the Marie Fleming Hall starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are still available at the door after 6 p.m. or online at www.ticketseller.ca.
Monday night at the Performing Arts Centre is the second on-stage concert at the Performing Arts Centre. In this double bill event, prairie roots and country crossover group Oh My Darling and independent roots artist Del Barber perform an intimate concert for an audience seated on stage.
Doors open at 6:30 and included in the $25 ticket price is a signature beverage provided by Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery so arrive a little early to enjoy the casual cabaret atmosphere. Tuesday morning, the charming pianist Sarah Hagen is at the Performing Arts Centre for an intimate classical music concert, Morning Melodies.
Hagen is heard in concert halls and on the airwaves throughout Canada and Europe and this gifted world-class performer is also known for her eloquent and entertaining commentary.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with coffee, tea and a chance to chat with Hagen, followed by an incredible concert to brighten your morning. Tickets are still available through the Ticket Seller by calling 250-549-SHOW (7469).
This Thursday, come to the Performing Arts Centre at 8 p.m. for Claddagh, It’s a lively Irish dance extravaganza, following in the spectacular style of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.
An instrumental array of violins, violas, cellos and harps, accompany the percussive whirlwind of dancing feet, beautiful Celtic voices and inspiring choreography. Coming up next Feb. 23 is the final show in the 2013/14 kids’ theatre series, Peter and the Wolf. It’s a beautiful puppet performance by Bernd Ogrodnik, the national puppeteer of Iceland.
Ogrodnik brings a visual aspect to this classic tale using his hand-crafted wooden puppets complemented by Prokofiev’s timeless original music. There are two limited-audience performances to choose from starting at 2 and 4 p.m., and tickets are on sale now through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).
Powerhouse Theatre’s season continues starting Feb. 26 with Little Shop of Horrors. Follow this dark and fun story of Seymour, who realizes popularity and success in his skid-row flower shop with the arrival of a strange alien plant. His newfound fame and fortune comes with one little catch: his precious plant has a taste for human blood. Will it cost Seymour everything? Find out at one of nine evening performances or two matinee performances happening through to March 8. Tickets can be purchased through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).
Ballet Kelowna returns to the Vernon stage March 1 with Innovation. Artistic director David LaHay, in his farewell season with the company he founded, brings a program to celebrate and commemorate, featuring six dance pieces that challenge the ideas of contemporary ballet. Come see Ballet Kelowna’s distinct “inno-classical” style in its original form and marvel in this Okanagan gem.

And just a reminder about back-to-back performances: Jesse Cook returns to Vernon with his Blue Guitar Tour Monday, Feb. 24 and Bryan Adams is on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
