Centre Point: Centre stages tributes to forums

Upcoming events coming to the Vernon Performing Arts Centre include tribute acts, film screenings, stand-up comedy and election forums.

We’re just about into the home stretch of 2011. I think of the last two months of the year as a time of tradition.

Known as an extreme Christmas enthusiast, I have holiday traditions starting as soon as this Tuesday when my largest (of six) artificial Christmas tree comes out of the box to stand proudly in my home for the next two months.

It only gets better from there as the yuletide fever spreads throughout my home and around town.

You can find tradition in the events coming to the Vernon Performing Arts Centre in the next few weeks, too. Returning favourites and tribute acts, film screenings, stand-up comedy and election forums, these events are all a little familiar and also offer entirely something new.

This Wednesday is a film screening of Warren Miller’s Like There’s No Tomorrow.

From the Miller empire of extreme skiing and snowboarding footage comes an adrenaline-fueled celebration of winter and those who live for it.

Showtime is at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre and tickets are on sale through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

Join us on Friday, Nov. 4 for a comedic extravaganza at the Performing Arts Centre as comedians Damonde Tschritter, Paul Myrehaug and Toby Hargrave share one stage for the Best of the West Comedy Tour.

These comics feed off one another’s energy and deliver an unforgettable evening of laughter and fun.

Best of the West starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are on sale through the Ticket Seller box office at 549-SHOW (7469).

The legendary music of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and more will be on the program for The Louisiana Hayride.

A local favourite with sold-out performances throughout the valley, the Hayride was inspired by the hit radio show in the ‘40s and ‘50s and features more than 30 songs that were aired while the show was in its prime.

They return to the Vernon Performing Arts Centre for an encore performance Nov. 6 starting at 7 p.m.

Find out what all the buzz is about. Call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469) for your tickets.

After last year’s smashing success with A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, the Arts Club Theatre Company returns to the Vernon stage Nov. 11 with Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story.

The first part of the production is a theatrical telling of Buddy Holly’s story and his incredible rise to fame in the three short years of his career. The play is followed by a musical tribute re-creation of Buddy Holly’s last concert, relying on the uncanny vocal styling and excitement of lead actor Zachary Stevenson.

Tickets can be purchased through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

With the municipal election in our near future, the Vernon Performing Arts Centre is hosting two all-candidate municipal election forums for both Vernon and Coldstream candidates.

Questions will be presented both in written form and through an open mic.

The Vernon forum is on Monday, Nov. 7 and will be moderated by Kiss FM news director Pete McIntyre.

The Coldstream forum is Tuesday, Nov. 15, moderated by Sun FM morning show co-host and regional news director Betty Selin.

Admission is by donation to each event, with proceeds going to the Performing Arts Centre Society’s children’s theatre fund.
