Centre Point: Don’t mix up your dates

It’s time now to look ahead (or back?) to what’s in store for the last few weeks of January for shows and events.

I noticed recently that my life often feels like a bit of a time warp. My job at the Performing Arts Centre is entirely focused on upcoming arts events and the last week I’ve been concentrating on shows and events that most people will be thinking about in March, April or even May.

After a day at the office, I head to the outside world where January is still going on around me… But, wait, I was thinking about January back in November! You can appreciate how confusing this can get after a while.

So it’s time now to look ahead (or back?) to what’s in store for the last few weeks of January:

Every weeknight since Monday, the Performing Arts Centre has been alive with activity as the participants of Move It! have been preparing for their big performance.

Move It! is a free dance workshop for participants of all ages, walks of life, and experience levels. Throughout the two-weeks of the program, 35 participants work closely with two facilitators, experiencing the exhilaration of movement and dance creation.

Move It! culminates in a new dance piece and you have a chance to see the results with an admission-by-donation performance open to the public on Friday starting at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre.

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra is back at the Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, Jan. 29 for Fireworks.

The evening features an often-laughter-provoking finale of the Haydn’s Symphony #45 where the musicians will leave the stage one by one as directed in the score. The music starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are still available through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

And the annual Vernon Winter Carnival kickoff is set to take place at the centre Feb. 2.

The proclamation of Queen Silver Star is a great way to get in the Carnival spirit as the 52nd Queen Silver Star and princesses are crowned.

Tickets for this favourite evening of family fun are still available through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

And now in its fourth year, the crowd favourite Snowed In Comedy Tour returns to the Performing Arts Centre Feb. 4.

Top international comedians will descend from the slopes to treat show-goers to a hilarious evening of wit and jest.

This year’s tour features newcomers Arj Barker and Pete Johansson as they tour B.C.’s ski-resort towns to snowboard by day, and perform their hysterical blend of stand-up comedy by night.

Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are still available through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW.

Whether it’s January, May or October, it’s always time to get out and see what’s happening in the community arts scene. Enjoy the shows!
