I love keeping a neat and tidy desk. Sure, you’d absolutely never know it based on how badly buried my work desk is these days.
The last time I really saw the surface couldn’t have been too long ago… March or April maybe? Of 2013?
Nah, it can’t be that bad, though I might need an excavator to find out.
My job deals entirely with upcoming events, so my desk is naturally covered in draft upon draft of handbills, show cards brochures and posters for those events, mixed in with press releases and random scraps of show information. In short, my desk overflows with fun stuff.
I’ve actually taken to thinking of my little disaster zone as a sign of just how lucky we are to have so many great events coming through the Vernon Performing Arts Centre and other venues.
So have a look at what’s been clogging up my desk recently, and more importantly, the events that we can all be excited about:
Tonight at the Performing Arts Centre are celebrated Canadian music legends Barney Bentall, Jim Byrnes and John Mann live in concert. With more than 25 albums, multiple Juno awards, and countless tours between them, the talent on hand is sure to deliver an incredible night of music and memories.
This special performance is in celebration of the centre’s 13th Birthday Bash and there are still a few tickets available at the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469) or order online at ticketseller.ca.
Powerhouse Theatre kicks off its 2014-2015 season this week, showcasing new directing talent with three one-act plays, Wednesday to Friday, with a matinee Saturday. All three plays are presented as one performance, with intermissions between them. The shows offer everything from Wild West historical hijinks in Tall Tales to dark modern humour in Ledge, Ledger, and the Legend and an abstract, multi-layered drama Tuna Fish Eulogy. Tickets are just $15 and on sale now at the Ticket Seller.
Chris Gibbs is on stage Friday with his hilarious stand-up comedy show Like Father, Like Son? Sorry.
It’s a show inspired by the fears and worries of being a father and the absolute terror of wanting to be a good one. Gibbs is no stranger to the big stage having performed at Just for Laughs and Winnipeg Comedy Festivals. This hysterical evening of comedy starts at 8 p.m. and you can get your tickets at 549-7469, ticketseller.ca.
A unique afternoon of family fun is at the Performing Arts Centre Saturday. Beatboxing string trio Infinitus takes the stage at 2 p.m. with From Handel to Hip Hop, where you’ll hear renditions of classical pieces peppered in with energetic popular music that might include anything from the Spongebob Squarepants theme song to the tune you heard on the radio on the way to the theatre.
Arrive one hour before to see live performances by Vernon Community Music School students and make music of your own with instruments supplied in the Marie Fleming Hall. Tickets are $12 and are on sale now at the Ticket Seller.
Join us for the first of our on-stage concerts featuring Vancouver-based duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer Oct. 5, starting at 7:30 p.m. These two up-and-coming musicians have made considerable waves in Western Canada’s rock scene, playing their own West Coast version of southern blues and rock using harmonica, electric guitar and foot percussion.

Coming up Oct. 7 is the first installment of the 2014/15 Morning Melodies series in the Marie Fleming Hall at the Performing Arts Centre. In this intimate classical concert, cellist Rebecca Wenham joins pianist Sarah Hagen for a 70 minute concert starting at 10:30 a.m. Arrive at 10 a.m. for coffee, refreshments and a chance to chat with the musicians.
