Harvest is such a marvelous time of year. From the bliss of autumn leaves, occasional Halloween decorations popping up, to the bounty of pumpkins available in every direction, this season is all about variety and adding a little something extra to your daily life.
The arts also offer a plentiful array in the coming weeks. Whether you’re looking for music, dance, art or just a simple walk in a haunted forest, it’s yours for the taking.
Rodney Brown has released 10 albums in his 30-year music career. This award winning singer/songwriter from Ontario will be performing a folk and roots concert at the Powerhouse Theatre Thursday starting at 7 p.m.
His recent album, North Land, culminates two years of research into the people, explorations and events that defined our Canadian boundaries. Tickets are available through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).
Sunday, Oct. 23, is the new collaborative work between Ballet Kelowna and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
Falcon’s Trumpet is a soaring work by renowned Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer and the musicians will be situated for surround sound throughout the audience. Meanwhile dancers from Ballet Kelowna will be on stage for a new ballet interpretation of the music. The show starts at 7 p.m. and you can call the Ticket Seller for tickets.
Local filmmaker Jim Elderton (Sveva, Prisoner of Vernon, Passion for Fire and more) is back with his new full-length film Oct. 26.
Curtain Call is a glimpse into the backstage and behind-the-scenes world of theatre. This documentary follows Olympian Camille Martens leading the Cirque Theatre Company with Okanagan Rhythmic Gymnastics towards their 2010 stage production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The event starts at 8 p.m. featuring a special live performance by the Cirque Theatre Company and Okanagan Rhythmic Gymnastics before the film. Tickets are on sale through the Ticket Seller.
Ashpa Naira is holding an art show open to the public from Oct. 27 to 30 in the Marie Fleming Hall at the Performing Arts Centre. Headlining Sculpture and Arte Funktional 2011 is artist Stephan Bircher whose works will be on display along with 24 Okanagan artists specializing in three-dimensional contemporary artwork. Admission is free and the hours of operation are available online at www.ticketseller.ca.
As we’re drawing close to Halloween night, get yourself into the spirit with these spooky-themed events:
Oct. 29 is the sixth annual Walk of Terror taking place amongst the moonlit woods at Caravan Farm Theatre.
Walking dead, ghastly spirits, deranged little girls and a murder of birds are sure to tickle your bones starting at 7 p.m., with musical guests The Star Captains bringing you ‘70s soul-inspired music starting at 8 p.m. Advance tickets can be purchased through the Ticket Seller.
Fright Night, touted as the “Okanagan’s biggest Halloween party,” is at the Wesbild Centre Oct. 29 starting at 8 p.m. Deejays from around the world will be there including Felguk, AC Slater, Nicky Romero, Drop the Lime, Smalltown DJs, Terravita, Steve Duda and more. Tickets are available through the Ticket Seller.
And make sure to visit the Okanagan Science Centre’s Haunted House fundraiser. This haunted house is open from Oct. 21 to 23 and 27 to 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. A junior haunted house is offered for younger children on those dates, except Oct. 21, from noon to 4 p.m.
