There’s a picture in the Chemainus Secondary School dance room that says “Take More Chances. Dance More Dances.”

And on Thursday, Jan. 24, students will do just that when they share a variety of dances during the annual Chemainus Secondary School Dance Showcase. The Dance Showcase will take place at 7 p.m. in the school’s multi-purpose theatre, and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door, but dance teacher Sarah Lane recommends buying them in advance if possible because the show will likely sell out.

“We’ve got a huge variety of dance styles,” said Lane. “We put on a really high-quality show.”

The Dance Showcase will feature dances choreographed by the students and by Lane and will include lyrical, contemporary, jazz, hip hop and classical pieces.

Lane says she chose this theme because “it’s really important for my students to express themselves and show why it is they love to be in the dance program in here and why they love to dance.”

“My biggest thing I try to instill in them is we dance from a place of passion,” she added.

Chemainus Secondary School’s dance program offers lyrical, jazz and hip hop styles for students in Grade 9 through Grade 12. This year, there are 42 students.

“It’s a really booming program,” said Lane. “It’s really popular with the students, and I try to bring a professionalism and a love for dance and performing to the students I teach.”
