As the name suggests, Cherryville’s Roots and Beets Festival is a celebration of the harvest, but it is also a celebration of creativity.
Hosted by the Cherryville Artisans Association, Saturday’s event is a celebration of the harvest in creative ways, said association president Helen Kovacs.
“We would like to invite everyone to come participate and enjoy all that Cherryville has to offer,” she said.
Artists will be on site demonstrating hot glass bead making and weaving. There will also be a roving portrait sketching artist and the Mountain Kid’s Creation Fort will offer kids crafts all day.
The local Society for Creative Anachronism will have a medieval display as well as kids crafts and live sparring demonstrations, and the festival will also feature a healing arts area, farmers’ market, vendors, and food by All Fired Up Catering.
Live music will be performed all day by the likes of Vernon trio Sorella, featuring Julie Armitage on guitar, Diana Ward on keys and percussion, Wendy Aronyk on flute and percussion, and Ellie Young on stand-up bass.
“They have an eclectic sound with superb four-part harmonies that will get us dancing,” said Kovacs.
Vancouver folk artist Pernell Reichert will also be on hand to perform his fast finger-picking, free-styling roots and rhythm numbers on his acoustic and hollow-bodied electric slide guitar as well as banjo. He’ll be accompanied by local musicians Rod Rincon and Rylan Foisy.
“We would like to thank our sponsors the Regional District of the North Okanagan, White Valley Resource Center, all those who have kindly donated and all volunteers, without you this event would not take place,” said Kovacs.
The Roots and Beets Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9 outside the Cherryville Artisans Shop and Marketplace, located at 1187 Highway 6 (behind Frank’s Store).
