Chickens The Musical’s “fowl humour” brought laughs and applause ringing through Nechako Valley Secondary’s Integris Community Theatre during the production’s opening weekend from Nov. 3 to 5.

From ovulating hens to chicken coups — as in jailbirds mutiny — puns and squawking abound as actors illustrate the struggles of a farming husband and wife in central Alberta in 1984.

The two-act comedy is directed by Megan Young, produced by Sylvia Byron, and delivered by actors Derek Broughton as Pal and Laurie Wallace as Liza. Charlene Wiebe, Kevin Wallace, Bryce Bach, and Valerie Pagdin played chicken characters Butterball, His Nibs, Stewer, and Alphonso respectively.

Musicians Thea Doyle, Karen Burk, Frank Tiramani, Heather Ferris, Lisa Striegler, Siobhan Klassen, and Kate Roberge provided live music for the production.

Audience member David Mycock enjoyed the musical as a whole, with “fowl humour” as one of the most memorable puns.

“I liked how they relate the story of the chickens to the farmer,” Mycock said. “I used to own chickens.”

Chickens The Musical continues on from Nov. 10 to 12.
