The Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra will be offering a new concert format in 2017 with the initiation of 3 p.m. Sunday matinees at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
The orchestra recognizes that it can be very challenging for older concert goers to attend evening concerts especially during the winter months and the CMO is hoping to make concerts more accessible to both elders and youth with this earlier time slot.
There will be three concert offerings beginning on Jan. 29 with The One and Only Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Major.
The CMO will be welcoming guest violin soloist Nancy DiNovo, a former member of the St. Louis, Toronto and Boston Symphony Orchestras and founding concertmaster of the world renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
With decades of performing experience, DiNovo has performed in the world’s major concert halls, on three continents, and has worked with such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Sir Colin Davis, Karl Ancerl, James Levine, Sir Neville Marriner and Christopher Hogwood. In demand as a pedagogue, she has taught at Tanglewood, the Marrowstone Festival, Western Washington University, UBC, U Vic and currently is teaching at Capilano University.
The opening half of The One and Only Beethoven concert will take the audience to Russia for a selection of music from Russian composers. The music ranges from the lively overture from the Opera Ruslan and Ludmila by Mikhail Glinka to Alexander Borodin’s, In the Steppes of Central Asia, a Tableaux Vivant depicting the crossing of an Asian Caravan over the Steppe lands of the Caucasus. CMO will also be including a selection from Tchaikovsky.
The program’s second half will be dedicated to the Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major which truly is the one and only Beethoven Violin concerto.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students per show. Tickets for all three upcoming Sunday matinee concerts are on sale through the Chilliwack Cultural Centre Box Office by calling 604-391-SHOW.
Here is the full lineup of CMO’s matinees: Jan. 29 – The One and Only Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Major, March 26 – Spring Equinox Concert with pianist David Antoniuk playing Chopin, and May 28 – Night in Vienna Waltz Concert.
