Northern Lights Choir

Northern Lights Choir

Founded in 2009, the Northern Lights Chamber Choir takes pride in presenting the finest choral music. Each concert is finely crafted from a variety of genres, mainly classical but drawing from the cultures and folk melodies of many countries in several languages. Enhanced by guest musicians and soloists, each concert traces a theme that ties together the different pieces.

The choir presents interesting and challenging music from genres not often performed here. They explore music from the Baroque to the Modern periods with a particular emphasis on “art songs,” that is, poetic pieces with beautiful images painted musically.

Each concert includes music that “stretches” the choir in terms of its technical requirements or its intellectual or emotional challenge. But we also include some lighter music to balance our programs. They intend to keep on growing as a choir and  invite our audiences to grow with us.

Drawing on a primarily secular repertoire, we include some Canadian compositions in each concert,  singing both a cappella and accompanied. Concerts are held in small venues chosen for their lively acoustics and the potential for an intimate experience with the audience.

Now in its seventh season, the choir has matured into a cohesive ensemble of dedicated singers with a well-blended sound under the guidance of the choir’s founder, Steve Guidone. In April 2012, NLCC was awarded a “mark of distinction” by the Shuswap Music Festival Society.

Director Steve Guidone aims for excellent tonal quality, precision and emotional expressiveness in every selection.

Jim Johnston is the choir’s stellar accompanist.  Born in Kamloops, Johnson was raised in Salmon Arm, beginning piano lessons at age 6 with Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum. In 1974, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia.

Listening to this choir is an exquisite experience.
