Classical concerts bring piano duo

Marcel and Elizabeth Bergmann will be playing their eclectic mix of classical arrangements on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Char's Landing.

Kicking off a series of classical concerts at Char’s Landing, Marcel and Elizabeth Bergmann will be playing their eclectic mix of classical arrangements on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m.

The Bergmanns are a piano duo who are international prize winners, including the Dranoff International Two Piano Competition and Provincia di Caltanisetta International Chamber Music Competition. They received first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanissetta, Italy, and were laureates of the fourth Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition.

“We have a variety of repertoire. We try to mix it up a little bit,” Marcel Bergmann said. “We are very classically trained and we play a lot of classical repertoire.”

The duo’s array of music ranges from jazz to classical and contemporary and includes various of their own arrangements and compositions.

The Bergmanns live in White Rock and are artistically involved with a music school in Langley.

In addition to keeping up with a full schedule of performances, the Bergmanns took over the role of artistic directors of White Rock Concerts from founder, George Zukerman.

Playing in Port Alberni for the first time, the Bergmanns are excited to perform for audiences at Char’s Landing.

Bergmann said audiences can expect a lively show with an array of different music.

“We try to present an eclectic mix of repertoire,” Bergmann said. “There’s obviously a lot of fun  repertoire.”

The up-and-coming Classical Concert Series was spearheaded by a group of classical music enthusiasts who wanted to bring concerts of world-class calibre to Port Alberni.

“People have to think of it like Vancouver coming to us and world-class artists coming to us,”said Colleen Goodrich, member of the organizing group for Alberni’s concert series.

The concert series is accessible solely through membership subscriptions that can be purchased at the Rollin Art Centre, Char’s Landing and from members.
