Classical Sundays

The series opens with Laura Karney, an American oboist and English hornist

The series, hosted by pianist Sarah Hagen, opens on Sunday with Laura Karney, an American oboist and English hornist currently making her home in Barcelona.

Karney and Hagen first met at the Banff Centre for the Arts several years ago and have since met up for music, food and wine in various places between here and Scandinavia.  Most recently, Hagen joined Karney for a week in Barcelona, where they began planning this concert under the influence of breezy Mediterranean beaches, sun-ripened Valencia oranges and a breathtaking performance by two Spain’s hottest flamenco dancers. They have chosen a programme which highlights the ancient and exotic sounds of double reed instruments, including some intoxicating music of the Tango. Other artists on the roster this year are two exquisite singers, bass-baritone Chad Louwerse and soprano Megan Skidmore.

All concerts take place at 2 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 145 Simms Road. Individual tickets are $20 or $10 for students, while a series pass is $70/$35.  For information, visit www.sarahhagen.com or email info@sarahhagen.com
