Coens get inside ‘60s folk scene

Inside Llewyn Davis, one of the most highly praised movies of the season, is the next Vernon Film Society offering at the Towne Cinema Monday, Jan. 20.

Directed by the Coen brothers (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo), the movie won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2013. It tells the story of a fictional folk musician in early 1960s New York, inspired loosely by the life and music of iconic Greenwich Village folk musician Dave Van Ronk.

Oscar Isaac (Drive, W.E.) as Davis and Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby) as a fellow musician are both outstanding in this funny, moving film which recounts a desolate week in both their lives.

Davis, despite his extraordinary talent and good looks, just can’t seem to catch a break and tramps through the streets of New York, guitar in hand, couch surfing and playing only the tiniest gigs. With his musical career stalled, he has reached a personal crossroads and is unsure whether to continue in a world that doesn’t seem ready for what his songs have to say.

Based on Van Ronk’s memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street, the movie perfectly captures the atmosphere of the ‘60s folk boom through its resonant soundtrack (curated by T-Bone Burnett), exquisite production design, and cinematography.

Inside Llewyn Davis screens Jan. 20 at 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available at the Towne Cinema and the Bean Scene coffee house for $7.
