Last week I mentioned something called NaNoWriMo, the novel writing challenge where you write an entire 50,000 word book in one month.
Was anyone out there brave enough to try it? If you did, you should be sitting somewhere around the 16,000 word mark at this point. However, if you did sign up and you’re not sitting anywhere close to that, don’t lose heart. The task you’ve undertaken is truly monumental. Some people will spend the better part of a year writing 50,000 words, so anything you manage to get done during NaNoWriMo is worthwhile.
I’ve never actually signed up for NaNoWriMo myself, but I used to kind of start a book in November with the idea of writing every day for as long as I could. More often than not, I’d be well into a first draft by the end of November and, even though I’d end up writing a fraction of what other people did, I made enough progress to feel good about the work I’d done.
The point is, even if you don’t manage to write an entire book this month, any time you spend writing is moving you closer to your goal, so don’t give up. Remember, it isn’t too late to join NaNoWriMo, so check it out online at www.nanowrimo.org.
If you’ve been busy with your preferred form of art and you’re looking for something to do with all work you’ve been producing, Seasons Sparkles The 12 Gifts of Christmas Sale — the annual Arts Council Art Sale — is looking for work for this season’s sale. Everything from locally made handmade gifts, such as paintings, pottery, home décor, wood working, fibre and more are being sought after.
This is a great opportunity to showcase your hard work and talent, as well as a chance to make some extra money for the holiday season. The sale is juried, which means applications will go through a vetting process and all items need to be an original design. The sale runs from November 25 until December 24 at the Arts Centre on Wharton St. For more information visit the Arts Centre in person or online at www.summerlandarts.com.
