A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum brings Roman mayhem to Coast Capital Playhouse

White Rock Players Club’s production A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is continuing (until March 1) at White Rock Playhouse.

The bawdy Stephen Sondheim-Burt Shevelove-Larry Gelbart musical comedy set in Ancient Rome, a frequently revived hit from the 1960s, lifts its farcical plot from the comedies of Roman playwright Plautus.

Featuring Steve Dotto, Ray Van Ieperen, Dann Wilhelm, Rebekah MacEwan, Raymond Hatton, Helen Volkow, Matt Loop and Pat McDermott, the show tells the story of wily slave Pseudolous (Dotto) who schemes to buy his freedom by helping his master’s gormless son Hero (Wilhelm) elope with his true love Philia (MacEwan).

Directed by Ryan Mooney, with musical direction by Shelley Eckstein, the show’s elaborate Roman street set is designed by Andrea Olund, with costumes by Pat McClean and properties by Naomi Mitchell.
