The 100 Mile House Community Band had its first rehearsal of the 2016/17 season on Sept. 13 under the baton of Dave Hooper.
Originally from Darlington in North East England, Hooper began playing trumpet and coronet in his youth, playing twice in England’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall when he was with the renowned Crockerton Prize Silver Band.
Hooper went on to earn his Teacher’s Certificate from the Institute of Education, University of Newcastle, majoring in music, before moving to Canada in 1969. His various diplomas and degrees include a diploma from Trinity College of Music in London.
He has taught music at the junior high school and high school level throughout Canada from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan and the Yukon Territory.
Hooper retired and moved to 100 Mile House in 2015 with his wife of 51 years, Jan. The couple has two adult daughters, one of whom lives in the 100 Mile House area and the other living in Edmonton.
When asked about his vision for the band, Hooper explains that he expects to, “find out what (band) members can do and take it from there.”
Hooper says he expects to use his experience to take the band to its fullest potential.
The 100 Mile House Community Band has about 20 musicians of varied experience and age. They meet to rehearse once a week at Christ The King Lutheran Church and perform numerous concerts in the community throughout the year.
