The Parksville and District Community Choir will present its 46th annual Christmas Concert, NOËL, on Dec. 6 beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Knox United Church in Parksville.
Under the direction of Ann Barber, the choir will open with an ambitious presentation of Messe de Minuit pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas) by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
Composed in 1690, the work is based on 11 popular French carols of the day, most of which are dance-like in character. Charpentier blended the melodies with new material into a charming short mass that includes solos, duets and trios that will be sung by members of the choir. The Community Choir always enjoys the challenge of a major classical work and this one fits the bill.
The concert then takes on a lighter flavour with a variety of popular Christmas gems from Canada and around the world. The Huron Carol, arranged by Robert B. Anderson; The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy by John Leavitt; In Dulci Jubilo, arranged by Audrey Snyder; Snow from Irving Berlin’s White Christmas; and Dormi Dormi, O Bel Bambin are just a few of the carols included in the program.
The 50-voice mixed choir will be accompanied by pianist Margaret Nelson.
Tickets are $18 each. Tickets are available in advance at Mulberry Bush Bookstores in Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Tickets will also be available at the door.
