Ask Brent Butt about what he does for a living and he will tell you he’s living his dream. Since he was 12 years old all he ever wanted to do was standup comedy, TV shows, and movies. 

Perhaps best known for coming into living rooms on the small screen in the Emmy-nominated Corner Gas, Butt has been doing standup since 1988 and sees his “routine” as a discussion.

“I don’t really do many ‘jokes’,” he said. “It’s more of a discussion that’s (hopefully) funny.”

He’s the winner of four Canadian Comedy Awards for Best Male Stand-up, Best Male TV Performance (twice), and Best Writing TV Series, the latter being for Corner Gas, his own creation. He is also the recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to community.

The difference between working on TV and performing live is vast, in Butt’s opinion.

“Standup is a solo effort, so it’s very different [from TV],” he said. “More loose, less structured.”

Despite those differences, fans of Corner Gas will find a similarity in the humour from that TV show to Butt’s visit to Cascades Casino’s Summit Theatre on March 12.

It’s an easy commute for Butt to come to Langley as a resident of Vancouver and he noted he tours any time he’s not in production on a TV show or movie.

“Gotta work, work, work,” he said. “Plus, I love the work.”

His love of doing live performance comes from the ever changing nature of it and the instant feedback.

“It’s truly different every night, because every cluster of individuals creates a brand new creature, and you have no idea what it wants, or what it likes, or what it hates,” he said. “The fun is trying to figure that out.”
