Local author/poet Harold Rhenisch, painter Alexandra Edmonds and artist/harpist Holly Smith are each about to give his/her interpretation of the landscape at Gallery Vertigo.
Having grown up in the Okanagan, Edmonds has studied art here and abroad, most notably in Paris, London and Iceland, which has partly inspired her current works.
“I love travelling so I’m always looking for opportunities to show my art around the world,” she said. “I took in ample inspiration (in Iceland) to last me for multiple years of painting, most notably in the waterfalls of the landscape.”
Along with Edmonds’ waterfalls, Holly Smith will be sharing her watercolour/acrylic mixed media visions.
“Painting has given me new eyes and the world is an infinitely more beautiful place focused through this new lens,” she said. “My new mantra is ‘pay attention to what gives you pleasure’ and I have found great pleasure covering paper or canvas with layers of watercolour or acrylic paint.”
Smith will also give a picture of the landscape through aural means via her harp.
“Being a harpist has made me appreciate other musicians and one of my goals for this year is to create a series of paintings featuring musicians. I am also a traveller and painting helps me remember the places I have been that touched some chord in my soul,” she said.
As Vertigo’s resident author, Rhenisch is celebrating the release of his new book, Two Minds – A Book of Ghazals.
“Harold will be reading aloud from some of his ghazals (ancient Urdu and Persian poems or songs), and we are fortunate to have him before he embarks on a book tour throughout B.C.,” said Donna Mair, with Gallery Vertigo.
Opening night for the Landscapes show at Gallery Vertigo, #1-3001 31st St. (upstairs), runs from 7 to 10 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10. Admission is free, however, donations will be accepted at the door. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
