A philosopher of the everyday

Creative Cow House Concerts brings to town Jay Aymar on Tuesday, Apr. 12 from 8-10:30 pm. Jay is a singer-songwriter who mixes elements of country and folk with introspective, humorous and straight-forward lyrics. His road-tested music, maintains a strong sense of storytelling and deeply expressive lyrics. He’s a philosopher of the everyday and a poet of small town life.

Jay’s latest album ‘Halfway Home’ is his best work yet and features the standout track “My Cherry Coloured Rose” which has recently been covered by the legendary Ian Tyson. A simple song written in an hour, about legendary hockey broadcasting icon Don Cherry and his late wife Rose. A quote from  Ian Tyson says it all: “Jay has written a true Canadian folk song – and it’s a classic.”

The youngest of a family of eight, Aymar clung to an old guitar his father hauled home from the dump and taught himself to play by ear. His passion is to travel across the country writing songs that just about anybody can relate to is influenced by truck stop waitresses, listening to the CBC and hearty conversations over pints of swill.

Jay’s interaction with the crowd, his guitar work, and intimate songs, will quickly transformed any audience into a gathering of friends. Sure to be a delightful, fun evening. Tickets available at the door – call to reserve and for house location at (250) 453-9100 or email creativecow@telus.net

Encore: Ambre and Gabrielle at the Packing House

After an enthusiastically received concert in Ashcroft last week, Ambre Mclean and Gabrielle Papillon have now been asked to perform their unique style of music-making at the Packing House on Friday, Apr. 15 from 7-9 pm.

The lyrics of Gabrielle’s songs are poetically wonderful – she was caught using the word “excavation” in a song, very unexpected and original. Ambre has a style all her own, and uses loops of her own voice as part of her performance. For those who were at the latest John Gilliat concert, imagine the same thing but with a voice. Brilliant stuff!

Ambre and Gabrielle are heading back East, where we hope Ambre will give birth to a musical genius who already kicks in sync with mum. We may not see Ambre out West again for a while, so the performance at the Packing House show is dubbed a ‘Pass-the-hat-we’ll-miss-you’. A special thanks to Liz Ekering for connecting us with these two fabulous musicians.

Sam Roberts to play in Lillooet

Canadian recording artist Sam Roberts is lending his name to fundraising efforts for the 100-year anniversary of the Lillooet Declaration. Chief Garry John, former chief of the Seton Lake Indian Band, confirmed on Thursday that Roberts, a Juno Award-winning rock musician who shot to fame with his hit single “Brother Down” in 2003, plans to visit Lillooet on and around Apr. 27.

“He’s agreed to come and help us do some fundraising,” John said in an interview. “He’s planning to be in Lillooet on Apr. 27. He’s going to be putting on a concert at a venue yet to be confirmed. We believe it will be the Lillooet REC Centre.”

May 10, 2011 marks 100 years since the signing of the Lillooet Declaration at Spences Bridge, a declaration that the St’at’imc people are the “rightful owners” of their tribal territory, which extends from Whistler to Lillooet and south to Harrison Lake.

Roberts will help raise money for the Celebration, which will take place in Shalalth, at the north end of Seton Lake just outside Lillooet. The event will take place over a number of days leading up to May 11. Roberts is likely to play some of his music alongside some St’at’imc singers, drummers and dancers, but it’s believed he’ll also partake in some workshops with youth.

“Sam wants it to be very low key,” Miller said. “He’s spending two and a half days up there. He just wants to learn about St’at’imc traditions and cultures. We’re going to take him to the archaeology sites, petro glyphs, to meet elders and hear stories from the old days. That’s probably the dominant thing Sam’s going to be doing.”

Ticket prices for a concert on Apr. 27 haven’t yet been worked out, nor have organizers decided whether the event will be free or by donation. (Jesse Ferreras – Pique Magazine)

Allen & Alexander are comin’ clean..

After test-driving their new songs across Western Canada on their “Love’em and Leave’m Tour 2010”, Jenny Allen and Leslie Alexander are both set to release highly anticipated new solo CDs, each produced by BCCMA/BCMIA Producer of the Year John Ellis (Jane Siberry, Barney Bentall).

The duo’s ‘Dirty Laundry Dual CD Release Tour’ will go ‘Clean Across Canada’ throughout the Spring and into the Summer. The Tour stops in Ashcroft on Thursday, Apr. 28 at St Albans Hall. Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm with tea/coffee and desserts.

The women first joined forces when the pair found themselves onstage singing with Jane Siberry on her famous encore “Calling All Angels.” Now sharing vocals, multiple instruments, and much in common, Jenny Allen and Leslie Alexander agree that their set list – exchanged like a salty heart-to-heart over a load of laundry – contains their most personal songs yet. Culled from their new records, they cover everything from old times to fresh starts with the razor-sharp songwriting and powerhouse performances their fans have come to expect.

Now, these women may not believe in talking dirty, but their onstage chemistry has been known to bubble over into sheer soap opera on occasion. Featuring harmony vocals, guitars, washboard, harmonica and other assorted instruments, from flat-out folk rock’n roll to more intimate fare, this ‘homecoming’ show for Alexander is surely not be missed!
