Musician Jez Hellard and the Djukella Orchestra will be playing at UniTea Tea Room in Ashcroft on June 27.

Creative Current

Two different arts camps are coming to Ashcroft this summer, one aimed at turning participants into rock stars.

Tango, jigs, and reels trio in Ashcroft

UniTea Tea Room presents a singer of potent songs, a stunning harmonica player, a talented guitarist, and producer: Jez Hellard, who thrives on music of all stripes. His band, The Djukella Orchestra, plays traditional and contemporary folk music, from jigs and reels to tango, rhumba, funk, and reggae. The music includes original and traditional songs as well as rare gems from some of the world’s greatest, if lesser-known, songwriters; often fellow troubadours Jez has met in many years on the road.

Whether he’s improvising over Gypsy rhythms, stomping out fiddle tunes on the harmonica, singing a rebel ballad, or dropping fresh beats on a variety of drums, Jez’s infectious energy, skill, and passion for music has gained him fans far and wide. As a harmonica player he’s renowned as an adept improviser in most styles of music, and loves to be put on the spot, either on stage or in the studio.

Don’t miss a great show of incredible music on Monday, June 27. Tickets are $20.00 at the door, or can be reserved by phone at (250) 453-9345. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30.

WRAPS offers two arts camps

Not just one, but two, super exciting camps are being offered by the Winding Rivers Arts & Performance Society this summer. Back again is the Fine and Dramatic Arts Camp, from August 15 to 19, designed for children aged four to 18. Come enjoy a week of singing, music, theatre, and art; or, if you are 11 or older, a week of movie-making. The Arts camp is $50.00 for the week, with siblings paying $30.00 each.

From August 22 to 26, WRAPS offers a RAWK Camp for ages 8 and up. Come release your inner rock star as the Speed Control trio teach you how to play the electric guitar, drums, and other band instruments! Speed Control will also be doing a live concert on August 26, which will feature all the RAWK Camp participants. Spots are limited for RAWK Camp, so be sure to register early to ensure a place. The camp is $50.00 for the week, with the option to purchase a souvenir t-shirt for $20.00. Registration forms will be available on the WRAPS website soon, or please send an e-mail request to windingriversarts@gmail.com. Tickets for the Friday concert will be on sale soon, and can be purchased in advance for $15.00 or at the door for $20.00. Both camps will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily at the Ashcroft HUB.
