The Creston and District Public Library is presenting a free showing of the documentary Under African Skies in Millennium Park on Aug. 23. The film is part of the Movies That Make You Think series.
Under African Skies was filmed on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon’s groundbreaking album, Graceland. Invited to visit by South African musicians when the country was a hotbed of racial and political issues, Simon was pilloried in the press for breaking sanctions against entertainers visiting the country. Graceland eventually became one of the most popular albums in history and is widely regarded as one of the great musical works of the 20th century.
Under African Skies shows Simon’s first visit back to South Africa and features interviews with South African musicians who comment on the album’s impact on their lives and their countries. The film will run at 8:30 p.m.
Friends of the Cinema, a supportive organization to the Friends of the Library, kicks off its 2012-2013 season pass drive on Aug. 17. A booth will be set up during the TSN Kraft Celebration community party at the Creston and District Community Complex.
Tentatively scheduled for the first part of the film season, which this year moves to Prince Charles Theatre, are We Have a Pope, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Lady and Salmon Fishing in Yemen.
