Culture and the City of Nanaimo are about to engage in a serious relationship this weekend.

Beginning on Friday (Sept. 26) and lasting until Sunday, the City of Nanaimo will be participating in Culture Days, an annual event that takes places in cities across Canada and celebrates the nation’s cultural diversity.

“There are at least 25 free interactive culture activities,” said Sarah Schmidt, executive director for the for the Nanaimo Arts Council and one of the organizers for Culture Days in Nanaimo. “These events are all over town from the Hammond Bay Studio to downtown.”

There will also be a number of events taking place downtown at Diana Krall Plaza in what has been dubbed the ‘culture hub.’

“Everything is free and everything is interactive,” Schmidt  said. “You’re not just in the audience you’re participating. There is something for everyone.”

Culture Days is also a non-profit organization of the same name that was formed in 2009 and is dedicated to promoting cultural diversity nationwide.

In addition to free Culture Days related events occurring in the city, there are a number of other events including the Latin American Festival at Departure Bay Activity Centre on Saturday.
