CVAG film series resumes Sunday with Little Men

Little Men is a poignant look at the close but fleeting friendship between two boys.

Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Winter 2017 TIFF film series continues Sunday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. with director Ira Sachs’s (Love is Strange) latest film, Little Men, a poignant look at the close but fleeting friendship between two boys, Jake Jardin (Theo Taplitz) and Tony Calvelli (Michael Barbieri), during their formative years.

Set against rapid gentrification in New York City and within a single block of Brooklyn, Little Men is a small, personal story with a larger political undercurrent. Writer-director Sachs subtly critiques the constant state of economic flux in a city that can swallow whole even the privileged if they hit a run of bad luck. Cinematographer Óscar Durán keenly alludes to this by observing meaningful details that include the glittering Manhattan cityscape, just out of reach on the other side of the river.

Tickets are $13, $12 for CVAG members, and are available at the CVAG Gift Shop, 580 Duncan Ave. in downtown Courtenay. To purchase tickets by phone, call 250-338-6211. All films are screened at the Rialto Theatre, Driftwood Mall in Courtenay.
