Students from the Qualicum Beach School of Dance (QBSD) are preparing to show the community what they’ve learned this year with a variety of performances for winter show on Dec. 10.
“Every student in the school, from our three-year-olds to our adults will be performing,” said Shari Selva, owner and director of the school.
While the show will include some traditional Christmas songs for dancers to perform to, the show will feature a broad range of styles, from jazz to tap to hip hop to musical theatre, and will be a good demonstration of what students learned over the year.
The annual show is also a unique one for students as it’s the only time they get to watch other QBSD members perform, said Selva.
With students sitting in the audience between their own performances, “the kids will be able to see and appreciate the different styles of dance… it might spark their interest in a different style.”
While there will be many performances to watch, Selva said she’s particularly excited for the public to see some of the hip hop and musical theatre pieces.
“We have a new hip hop teacher to our school (Dora Belme),” said Selva. “Her style is really awesome and she’s just a super fun teacher, so I’m excited to have the rest of the school see those classes.”
In musical theatre, a junior and senior class are working on a piece from Into the Woods, “and we’ll be performing that full musical in the beginning of June at the (Vancouver Island University) theatre. So I’m excited to showcase a couple pieces from that to give everyone a taste of what’s to come.”
QBSD’s winter show takes place Sunday, Dec. 10 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre starting at 6 p.m.
Admission is at the door, and is $12 for kids and youth, $15 for adults and $50 for a family of four.
