Jupiter Ascending is the latest sci-fi epic from The Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix. In what sounds like a cross between that movie and Star Wars, life on Earth and countless other planets are a result of seeding by more evolved aliens. This “alien royalty” harvests Earthlings once they reach an evolved state of perfection to create a youth serum that allows them to live forever. However, when these royal beings discover there is an heir on Earth that could disrupt their power structure, they set out to eliminate the threat.
Channing Tatum stars as a genetically engineered soldier who arrives on Earth to protect Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a down-on-her-luck janitor who is unaware of her otherworldly royal heritage and the bounty that has been put on her head. Academy Award-nominee Eddie Redmayne (Theory of Everything) also stars as one of the royals wanting to kill Jupiter.
If you want a fantasy movie with more traditional ogres, warlocks, dragons and Julianne Moore as a witch, you may want to check out The Seventh Son. Based upon the novel The Spook’s Apprentice, the story centres on Thomas Ward (Ben Barnes), who is being sought by a crotchety old night (Jeff Bridges), because he is a “seventh son of a seventh son.” The two band together to battle supernatural creatures and seek out the evil queen Mother Malkin (Moore).
Ben Barnes is no stranger to fantasy films, having played the title characters in both The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Dorian Gray as well as Stardust.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been a huge success both on the small screen and big screen for Nickelodeon. Since the TV show’s debut in 1999, it has been the highest rated show on the network and in 2004 The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was a hit.
Just over 10 years later, the character gets another shot on the big screen in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water.
While the last movie was completely animated, the sequel combines both animation and live action. SpongeBob and his gang must leave the ocean and venture out to the mainland in search of a pirate (Antonio Banderas) who has stolen a priceless recipe that could mean the end of their home.
If you know the over-the-top silly humour that inhabits the world of SpongeBob, expect much more of the same that will attract mostly young but many young at heart who grew up wanting to live in a pineapple under the sea.
