Davis: Hollywood loves a sure thing: Remakes, sequels, re-matches

X-Men: Days of Future Past and Blended are on the way to movie screens near you.

Iam going to avoid the obvious puns about how big Godzilla was this past weekend but it became obvious that the movie company was ecstatic enough with the almost $200 million worldwide gross that by Sunday they announced a sequel. However, the mutant lizard has some competition from some mutant humans this weekend.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens and, as far as super-hero movies go, this one could be as epic as The Avengers movie.  It serves as a sequel to both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class and is based upon a storyline in the comic series that involves both the present day characters and some from the past.  They join forces in order to change a major historical event and fight an epic battle that could save our future. Therefore, you will see the likes of Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian Mckellen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin and Ellen Page star alongside James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Peter Dinklage.

Already getting over 90 per cent favourable reviews from critics, according to Rottentomatoes.com, expect more sequels and spin-offs from X-Men.  In fact, the next sequel has already been announced featuring the younger X-Men and it has been announced that Channing Tatum will star as Gambit in the film with hopes to spin-off his character into his own movie.

When you think of classic Hollywood on-screen pairings, you might think of Burton and Taylor, Bogart and Bacall or Tracy and Hepburn—but what about Sandler and Barrymore?

While Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore may not go down in history with the classic silver screen couplings, they have a proven track record. Their previous two outings, The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, were both hits with the audience but not necessarily with the critics and their latest, Blended, will likely fare the same. They play single parents who go out on a blind date and instantly dislike each other.  But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation at a luxurious African safari resort for a week, they do not realize that they will be sharing a suite.

They re-team with the director of The Wedding Singer and the supporting cast includes Joel McHale, Kevin Nealon, Terry Crews and Shaquille O’Neal. All I can say is that ever y time 50 First Dates is on TV, I stop and watch it—I hope Blended has the same charm.
