Davis: Musical kids cross over to movies

Getaway stars Ethan Hawke and a Shelby Mustang Super Snake, so it definitely has an appeal beyond the teen crowd.

Summer is winding down and so are the summer movies as Labour Day weekend tends to be the weakest for new releases. That said, there are a few new releases this weekend and some notables still in town.

Even if you are not a fan of the latest boy band One Direction, their documentary This is Us is notable because of its director, Morgan Spurlock. Spurlock made a name when he made himself the subject of Super Size Me, when he documented himself eating nothing but McDonald’s food for a month.

Although it may look like he did this musical documentary for a paycheque, he actually unsuccessfully campaigned to direct both the Justin Bieber and Katy Perry documentaries.

One Direction: This is Us follows the band from before their appearance on the U.K. version of The X-Factor and becoming mentored by Simon Cowell, to their most recent concert tour.  Fans of the band will flock to this movie.

Everyone else may be flocking to a movie starring another teen sensation, Selena Gomez.  However, since Getaway also stars Ethan Hawke and a Shelby Mustang Super Snake, it definitely has an appeal beyond the teen crowd.

Hawke plays a burned out race car driver who is thrust into a do-or-die mission behind the wheel when his wife is kidnapped. With Brent’s only ally being a young hacker (Gomez), his one hope of saving his wife is to follow the orders of the mysterious voice (Jon Voight) who’s watching his every move through cameras mounted on the car.

Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciaran Hinds and Jim Broadbent star in the suspenseful drama Closed Circuit. Following a mysterious explosion in a busy London market, the police swoop in, a suspect is detained, and the country prepares for one of the most high-profile trials in British history.

Two exceptional lawyers with a romantic past step into a dangerous web of secrets and lies, and when evidence points to a possible British Secret Service cover up, it’s not just their reputations but their lives that are at stake.

And if you missed some big summer movies, the Landmark Grand 10 is playing a double-feature of two of the biggest: Star Trek: Into Darkness and World War Z.  As well, you can still catch the first blockbuster of the summer, Iron Man 3, at the Landmark Encore Capitol Theatre in West Kelowna.

The Encore is also giving you another chance to see what some are calling the biggest flop of the summer.  Although The Lone Ranger was a financial disappointment, most people I talked to enjoyed it and now is the time to give it a chance at a discounted price.
